about

EXCRUCIATOR was formed in early 2008 when guitarist/vocalist Chris Birkle proposed the idea of starting a faster, heavier band that brought back the energy of the early days of death metal as it took form from the ashes of thrash to long-time friend and fellow guitarist Josh Kay. The two agreed and during the winter of 2008 convinced the destroyer of strings, Craig Bridenbeck, to join on bass. Not content to sit idle while searching for a drummer, the trio began writing original material and recorded a rough one song demo using a drum machine. The demo reached the ears of drummer Marcus Hartford who quickly convinced the band with his thunderous beats that he was the right man for the job. The four found instantaneous cohesion and continued writing new
material while rehearsing frequently.

Within a few months EXCRUCIATOR had built a solid repertoire of original songs infl uenced by the earliest days of death metal before blast beats and down-tuning, pioneered by iconic albums such as Scream Bloody Gore by DEATH and Seven Gates by
POSSESSED. Confi dent that they had hit their mark, the band entered the studio during summer 2009 to record their fi rst proper demo entitled By the Gates of Flesh. The eight track demo quickly gained favor amongst the Portland metal crowd and this growing notoriety allowed the four to acquire gigs with national acts such acts as Forbidden, Cauldron, Enforcer, Ensiferum, Witchaven, Powerglove and Last Empire.

Opportunity arose for EXCRUCIATOR when the band opened for Vektor during their summer 2010 tour. Thoroughly impressed with the songwriting, musicianship and vicious live performance displayed by EXCRUCIATOR, VEKTOR reported the news to their label, New York-based Heavy Artillery Records. The band was offered a deal and promptly joined the ranks with the release of By the Gates of Flesh as a five-track ep during November 2010, becoming the second installment in the label’s now popular “Wax Maniax” series of limited edition vinyl and CD demo releases.

Bolstered by the tremendous reponse to By the Gates of Flesh, EXCRUCIATOR hit the studio in December 2010 to begin recording their debut full-length album Devouring. Now scheduled for release on August 2nd 2011, Devouring promises to galvanize the
old-school metal forces in the battle for true metal supremacy!
